UF Astraeus Space Institute launches new hub for space exploration and innovation

The University of Florida’s Astraeus Space Institute marked a major milestone Thursday, Aug. 20, with a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of its new Mission Operations Center at the Computer Science Engineering Building, located on main campus in Gainesville. The new facility provides Astraeus with a dedicated space to advance interdisciplinary research, collaboration and innovation in space exploration.

Faculty, university leaders, researchers, students and community partners gathered for the event to officially recognize the growth of Astraeus and its continued mission to bring together experts from across UF to address challenges and opportunities in the space sector.

Rachael Seidler, Ph.D., director of the Astraeus Space Institute and professor in the department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology and Neurology, highlighted the significance of the new facility and Astraeus’ expanding role in advancing space research and collaboration.

“Seeing Astraeus reach this milestone is a testament to how far we have come and the incredible collaboration across the University of Florida. This Mission Operations Center represents not only what we have built, but also where we are going as we continue to advance space research, education and innovation,” Seidler said.

David Norton, Ph.D., vice president for research at UF and chair of the Florida Space Research Consortium board, said the new headquarters will provide a central hub for collaboration and innovation.

“This new headquarters gives the Astraeus Space Institute a home where researchers from across the University of Florida can come together to collaborate, innovate and tackle some of the most important challenges in space science and technology. It’s an exciting step forward for UF and for Florida’s growing role in the future of space exploration,” Norton said.

The new Mission Operations Center will serve as a central hub for Astraeus activities, supporting research initiatives, student engagement and partnerships across the university’s growing space ecosystem.

John Conklin, assistant director of the Astraeus Space Institute and professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, said the center will play a key role in upcoming research missions.

"We are very excited about the new high-tech Mission Operations Center opening at UF Astraeus Space Institute. In February of next year, our Earth Science technology demonstration mission, GRATTIS, will launch. The Astraeus MOC will be critical for our command and control of this vehicle in low Earth orbit," Conklin said.

Following the ribbon cutting, Astraeus welcomed the broader UF community to explore the institute during an open house on Friday, Aug. 21. The event gave students, faculty and staff an opportunity to learn more about Astraeus’ work and connect with members of the university’s growing space community.

The open house featured tabling from UF space-related student clubs, showcasing opportunities for students interested in space research, education and outreach. Rob Ferl, Ph.D., Astraeus senior advisor and a distinguished professor in horticultural sciences, also joined attendees to share insights from his groundbreaking research and experience during his 2024 flight to space aboard a Blue Origin rocket.

Through research, education and partnerships across disciplines, Astraeus continues to strengthen UF’s position as a leader in space innovation and prepare the next generation of space professionals.
