UF turns research strength into innovation impact
Every university expects discoveries to grow as research funding increases. The University of Florida's distinction is what happens next.
According to the 2025 AUTM Licensing Survey of nearly 200 public and private universities, released earlier this month, UF placed among the nation’s Top 10 on several key measures tracking how effectively discoveries move from the laboratory to the marketplace.
UF ranked fifth nationally in invention disclosures and licenses and options, eighth in patents issued and 10th in patent applications. During the reporting period, UF researchers reported 461 invention disclosures, executed 338 licenses and options, received 145 issued patents and submitted 210 new patent applications.
Those rankings underscore UF's effectiveness in translating research discoveries into patents, licenses and other commercial opportunities.
The momentum has continued into fiscal year 2026.
Preliminary figures show UF researchers generated 463 invention disclosures, filed 500 patent applications, secured 162 issued patents, completed 320 licensing agreements, and launched 12 startup companies.
“Taken together, the numbers show how UF's growing research enterprise is translating discoveries into patents, licenses and industry partnerships that extend the impact of university research beyond campus,” said David Norton, UF’s vice president for research.
The results highlight UF's success in moving discoveries beyond the laboratory and into intellectual property portfolios, industry partnerships and potential real-world applications.
"Research expenditures provide the fuel for innovation," said Jim O'Connell, assistant vice president and director of UF Innovate. "Our researchers are generating discoveries at a remarkable rate, and we're working closely with them to ensure those innovations have the opportunity to benefit society."
For O'Connell, those numbers speak to a culture that encourages faculty, staff and students to think beyond publication and consider how their discoveries can solve problems outside the university.
"Whether a technology reaches the public through an established company, a licensing agreement, or a startup, our goal is the same: helping transformative ideas reach the people who need them," O'Connell said.
