Tampa Bay Times: Why Dr. Stuart R. Bell is the right president for the University of Florida

As former chairs of the University of Florida Board of Trustees, we have each had the distinct privilege of safeguarding the mission, values and trajectory of our state’s flagship institution. We understand firsthand the immense responsibility that comes with selecting a leader capable of guiding a world-class research university.

It is with great enthusiasm, pride and unified conviction that we write today to express our full support for Dr. Stuart R. Bell as the nominee for the next president of the University of Florida.  A university president must possess a rare combination of academic credentials, executive capability and a clear-sighted vision for the future of higher education. Dr. Bell fully embodies these qualities.

During his decade at the helm of the University of Alabama, his accomplishments speak for themselves. Under his leadership, UA achieved prestigious R1 research status, experienced historic enrollment growth, significantly improved student retention and graduation rates, and dramatically expanded its physical and academic footprint.

Furthermore, his extensive experience at the highest levels of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) — including serving as conference president — demonstrates a unique ability to navigate the complex, high-stakes landscape of modern collegiate athletics and national higher education policy.

Dr. Bell is a leader of profound vision. He understands that a flagship university must be unyielding in its pursuit of academic rigor, technological innovation and practical economic impact. His background as a highly respected engineer and researcher ensures that he speaks the language of our faculty, while his proven track record of successful fundraising guarantees the resources necessary to keep UF on its upward trajectory.

He possesses the steady hand and bold outlook required to elevate UF toward its goal of being consistently recognized among the top public universities in the nation, all while maintaining a steadfast commitment to core academic excellence.

Further, Dr. Bell has led with distinction in an era during which all university leaders were challenged to consider initiatives related to diversity and inclusion. It is vital to view this issue in its proper context. The conversation surrounding these concepts has rapidly evolved in recent years, and today, the terminology is too often weaponized, oversimplified and misused by various factions to score political points.

To suggest that managing a large public university through a shifting cultural landscape is somehow disqualifying is to misunderstand the role of a modern university president. Dr. Bell has always operated with the primary goal of respecting and valuing diverse viewpoints, ensuring student success and institutional growth.

Finally, we wish to commend the current University of Florida Board of Trustees and the Presidential Search Advisory Committee for their exemplary diligence throughout this process. Finding the right leader requires an exhaustive, transparent and intensely focused search.

The current board navigated this responsibility with the utmost care, vetting a widespread pool of exceptional candidates to identify a leader who fits UF’s precise needs. Their unanimous recommendation of Dr. Bell is a testament to a robust process that prioritized the long-term interests of our students, faculty, alumni and the state of Florida.

The University of Florida is poised to enter a historic new era. We are confident that Dr. Bell is the right leader to guide us there, and we urge the full Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors to finalize his confirmation.

Manny Fernandez, Dianna Morgan, Carlos Alfonso and David Brown are past chairs of the University of Florida Board of Trustees.
