Top holiday travel tips for uncertain times

With the busy holiday travel season approaching, a University of Florida expert says preparation and flexibility are key to enjoying stress-free trips.

Rachel J.C. Fu, chair and professor in the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management and director of the Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute, shares smart strategies for navigating today’s unpredictable travel landscape.

“Holiday travel always comes with higher demand and greater risk of disruptions,” Fu said. “A few smart choices can make the experience smoother and much less stressful.”

Here are Fu’s top tips:

  • Buy travel insurance early. Look for “cancel for any reason” coverage. It’s worth every penny when disruptions hit.
  • Book refundable hotels and flights. Flexibility equals peace of mind.
  • Fly early in the day. Mid-morning flights are less likely to be canceled or delayed.
  • Keep essentials in your carry-on. Pack medications, chargers and snacks as if your luggage won’t make it.
  • Track your flights. Use apps like FlightAware or your airline’s app for real-time updates.
  • Sign up for TSA PreCheck or CLEAR. When staff are short, these programs can save time and sanity.
  • Plan extra connection time. Especially during government shutdowns or holiday travel, delays can stack up quickly.
  • Stay kind and calm. Holiday crowds can test patience, but respect and empathy go a long way with airline and airport staff.
  • Use credit cards with travel protection. Many premium cards cover delays, lost bags and cancellations.
  • Expect the unexpected. Leave room in your itinerary for surprises, sometimes the most unforgettable memories are the unplanned ones.

“Travel is about discovery, not just destination. A little flexibility helps you embrace the journey, even when things don’t go as planned.” —Rachel J.C. Fu
