More than 3,000 graduates plan to celebrate at summer commencement

UF physician-scientist and AI pioneer Dr. Azra Bihorac to address graduates

This summer, more than 3,000 students are expected to graduate from the University of Florida during three commencement ceremonies in the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on Friday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 9.  

The first ceremony, celebrating 447 doctoral graduates, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8.

Bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates from the College of the Arts; College of Design, Construction and Planning; College of Health and Human Performance; Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering; College of Journalism and Communications; College of Medicine; College of Nursing; College of Pharmacy; College of Public Health and Health Professions; and College of Veterinary Medicine will begin their ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8.

The commencement ceremony for bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degree graduates from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Warrington College of Business will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.

This summer’s graduates hail from five continents, representing 68 countries and 47 states.

The faculty speaker at all three ceremonies will be Azra Bihorac, M.D., M.S., senior associate dean for research affairs at the College of Medicine. A visionary leader in biomedical artificial intelligence, Dr. Bihorac is internationally recognized for her contributions to clinical informatics and translational research in nephrology and acute care medicine. Her research focuses on deploying ambient, immersive and human-centered AI technologies to optimize the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of acutely ill patients. 

Her mission is clear: to create intelligent human-centered health care, where innovation, technology and excellence are aligned to deliver optimal quality and experience for every patient, caregiver, and health care provider.
