Tropical Storm Ian – Update 11 – 9/29/2022

University of Florida officials continue monitoring Tropical Storm Ian. Here is what we know today:
Ian weakened to a tropical storm on Thursday. Weather conditions in Gainesville are expected to improve today, according to the National Weather Service Center office in Jacksonville. However, parts of Alachua County, including the Gainesville campus, remain under a tropical storm watch, as winds are ranging between 25 and 35 mph, with wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
Tropical Storm Ian has emerged into the western Atlantic and is moving north-northeastward. The National Hurricane Center expects Ian may strengthen into a hurricane once again by Thursday night.
Heavy rainfall will continue to spread across the northeastern parts of the Florida peninsula through Thursday and reach portions of the Southeast U.S. later this week and this weekend.
UF units should continue to monitor forecasts and follow guidance from local officials.
The University of Florida campus in Gainesville will be closed today through Friday, Sept. 30. Only essential university personnel should report for work.
The university expects to reopen and resume classes and normal campus operations on Saturday, Oct. 1.
