UF to hold vigil in honor of Buffalo victims

The University of Florida will hold a candlelight vigil today to mourn the lives lost in the mass shooting that tragically unfolded in Buffalo, New York.

The vigil will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Century Tower. All are welcome to attend. In addition, Century Tower will be lighted in orange and blue tonight to honor the victims.

Pastor Gerard Duncan, a member of UF President Kent Fuchs’ African American Community Advisory Council and the chair of the Alachua County Christian Pastors Association, will speak at the vigil. He will be joined by Marsha McGriff, UF’s Chief Diversity Officer.

Fuchs addressed the shootings Wednesday with a statement in which he expressed his grief and frustration.

“Here at UF, I am reminded of the importance of our university’s core values of inclusion, freedom and civility and community,” Fuchs said. “The aftermath of the tragedy in Buffalo reminds us that while one person can commit despicable acts, all of us can come together to ensure that inclusive love ultimately triumphs.”
