Media Advisory: FDOT, UF partner to address pedestrian and traffic safety

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation are partnering during the first week of the fall semester to educate, address and correct both pedestrian and driver behavior through a high-visibility enforcement campaign.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, representatives from the university and FDOT, and University of Florida Police officers will be at the southwest corner of University Avenue and 13th Street encouraging good and safe pedestrian and driving behaviors during peak traffic times from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Officials also will bring awareness to FDOT’s ongoing safety improvements to University Avenue (State Road 26), which include the construction of new traffic signals and crosswalks at the intersections of University Avenue at 16th Street, and University Avenue at 19th Street to promote pedestrian safety and increase mobility.

Additionally, UF President Kent Fuchs, FDOT District 2 Director of Operations Travis Humphries and UFPD Chief Linda Stump-Kurnick will be available to speak to the media at 11:30 a.m. at the southwest corner of University Avenue and 13th Street about the ongoing changes and efforts led by all agencies involved.

Also, UFPD and FDOT officials will be available during the remaining enforcement times for reporters interested in participating in a ride- along with officers or trailing officials on foot as they engage with members of the community.

Those interested in participating in a UFPD ride-along must contact Cynthia Roldán at croldan@ufl.edu no later than Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. to obtain a waiver form.
