Pianist Chu-Fang Huang to perform at University Auditorium

GAINESVILLE, FL –– Chu-Fang Huang, winner of the 2005 Cleveland International Piano Competition, will perform at 4 p.m. Feb. 25 at University Auditorium.

The Cleveland International Piano Competition, founded in 1975, adds to a city already culturally rich. Held every other year over a 10-day period, the competition draws hundreds of entries from around the world. The competition offers the largest cash prizes of any contest of its kind worldwide, and offers the top four contestants the unique opportunity to perform piano concertos with the renowned Cleveland Orchestra. In 2003, the Cleveland Competition was awarded five stars –– the highest number possible –– in piano competitions worldwide by Gustav Alink, an internationally recognized expert on music competitions.

Huang won the 2005 competition from an initial field of more than 240 applicants and 30 finalists. Her prize package included the Mixon First Prize of $50,000; a recital debut at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, New York; and numerous professional concert engagements.

She also has won top honors from the California International Young Artists Competition, the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra Competition, the Missouri Southern International Competition, the Chinese American National Showcase, the Nina Wideman Piano Competition, the Kingsville International Competition, the Grace Welch Piano Prize and the Corpus Christi International Competition. Huang was a finalist at the renowned Van Cliburn Piano Competition in Forth Worth, Texas in 2005.

As a solo artist, Huang performed with a number of orchestras in the United States including The Cleveland Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony, Eastern Symphony Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, the Hilton Head Orchestra and the Illinois Philharmonic. Abroad, she has performed with the Australia Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Liaoning Philharmonic and the Shenzheng Philharmonic.
