UF survey finds many Floridians still recovering from 2004 hurricanes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — As homeowners clean up debris from Hurricane Dennis and keep a wary eye on newly formed Emily in the Atlantic, several hundred thousand Florida residents have not even started home repairs caused by last year’s destructive hurricanes, says a University of Florida researcher.

UF scientists detect soybean rust, farmers brace for outbreaks

CITRA, Fla. — Asian soybean rust, a crop-killing disease first detected in the United States last fall, has been found near Citra on soybeans at a University of Florida “sentinel plot” planted early to detect the fungus. It was one of two findings this week that mark the first appearances of soybean rust on U.S. soybeans during the typical growing season, and UF researchers fear the discovery signals the beginning of outbreaks that may devastate the nation’s $16 billion soybean industry.

Citrus canker found at UF research facility, will halt numerous experiments

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Citrus canker, one of the most destructive diseases affecting Florida’s $9 billion citrus industry, has been found in a University of Florida citrus research grove at UF’s Indian River Research and Education Center, or IRREC, near Fort Pierce.

The trend is raising alarm as the number of people dying from an overdose of the drug fentanyl, an opioid 100 times more potent than morphine, rises.

New UF Farm Safety Program Targets 200,000 Migrant Workers

Manatee Eyes Could Be Window To Health Status

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — For Florida manatees, the eyes may have it, say University of Florida researchers studying whether the mammals’ unusually thick tear film helps protect against disease and could be used to gauge the endangered sea cows’ ability to fight stress from cold water temperatures.
