Malaria and more studied at EPI

The distance between Florida and far-off places is shrinking as global trade and travel import more products and people to our state from across the world. Unfortunately, new diseases may travel to our state along with these tourists. They may unwittingly bring malaria, or a plant or animal that transmits or carries a new pathogen. [...]

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of integration

Members of the University of Florida community:
Fifty years ago today, on Sept. 15, 1958, a black Air Force veteran named George H. Starke Jr. registered for classes at the University of Florida College of Law. It was the beginning of integration at UF, and one more step toward the end of racial segregation in the [...]

Welcome!

We begin 2008-2009 with some exciting developments.
With a GPA of 4.18 and SAT of 1293, this year’s incoming freshmen are more academically talented than ever. Workers on campus are making progress on several major new buildings. Our Florida Tomorrow capital campaign has raised more than $700 million toward its goal of $1.5 billion.

As another fall semester approaches, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your fortitude during the past year. It was a period that tested us as educators, forcing us to make some difficult choices about how to [...]

Winning the lottery

One of the most inspiring stories I have heard in a long time relates to the priceless value of education and how this can affect alumni, and the loyalty they feel for their alma mater and others whose lives they touch.
This story is at the heart of the largest gift the College of Veterinary Medicine [...]

Emerging Pathogens breaks ground

Recently, the University of Florida broke ground on the Pathogens Research Facility, a state-of-the-art laboratory that will serve as home to UF’s Emerging Pathogens Institute.

UF has [...]

Budget woes loom in new year

The budget news across the state is not good and could potentially become worse in coming months.
We took a $22 million reduction last fall and implemented other initiatives such as a hiring freeze to help offset the state’s revenue shortfall.
We also created a campus Task Force on Cost Reduction and Efficiency, [...]

Community Relations enhances relationships

Although The Gator Nation is everywhere, the focus of the University of Florida office of Community Relations is North Central Florida. We work to enhance relationships with Gainesville and Alachua County, and with the other cities and counties in our region. We interface with chambers of commerce and with the Heart of Florida Coalition, which [...]

What’s Your Focus?

Eye-opening and life-changing are the best words to describe the day I decided to get involved with the climate change initiative. After attending a conference on climate change issues in Florida, my philosophy emerged: Nothing in climate change is possible without collective action. If you follow popular belief, you know that it took collective action [...]

Spreading news in 2008

The new year brings opportunity for new beginnings, as well as reflection on the past.
As I reflect on 2007, I think about the many University of Florida stories which appeared in “Inside UF.” It is impossible to communicate everything that is happening, but “Inside UF” attempts to communicate as much as possible – either online [...]
