Create clay pottery at Harn Museum Family Day, Oct. 27

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Visitors of all ages will discover the joy of forming pottery with clay during a Family Day at the Harn Museum of Art from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. Admission to the event’s exhibit, “The Ceramics of Toshiko Takaezu: Function, Form and Surface,” is free and no registration is necessary.

IT professionals encouraged to attend “Lunch and Learn” session on Oct. 16

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Plan now to attend a fun and informative “Lunch and Learn” session about IT security on Oct. 16. The two-hour roundtable discussion, hosted by UF IT experts John Sawyer and Jordan Weins, will offer the latest tools, ideas and guidelines in encryption. Participants are encouraged to ask questions as Sawyer and Weins share some their best practices.

UF history professor to lecture at Harn Museum about European life, politics

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — European life and politics in the 18th and 19th centuries are the topics of an upcoming lecture by University of Florida associate professor of history Sheryl Kroen. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, Kroen will speak at the Harn Museum of Art. She will explore the context of satire evident in works by James Gillray, Francisco de Goya, William Hogarth and Honoré Daumier on display in the exhibition “From Dürer to Renoir: European Prints from the Harn Collection.”

Visiting opera star facilitates master class

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The College of Fine Arts School of Music, in cooperation with the National Association of Teachers of Singing, will host a master class with Metropolitan Opera star and three-time Grammy winner Sherrill Milnes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 20 at the University of Florida’s University Auditorium.

Paul Taylor Dance Company to perform at the Phillips Center on Oct. 30

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Paul Taylor was once called the “naughty boy” of the dance world by the queen of modern herself, Martha Graham. But rather than take affront, he chose to laugh the moniker off. Thankfully, he’s been laughing for more than 50 years.

Museum Nights features gallery talk, “Art:21″ premiere

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Thursday, Oct. 11 is another busy Museum Nights at the Harn Museum of Art. In addition to the galleries being open until 9 p.m., UF School of Art and Art History director Anna Calluori Holcombe will present a gallery talk at 6 p.m. through the new exhibition “The Ceramics of Toshiko Takaezu: Function, Form and Surface.” Following the gallery talk, the Harn has partnered with WUFT-TV to premiere excerpts from the fourth season of the PBS series “Art:21″ at 7 p.m. Following the showings, Harn MUSEs will conduct tours related to the season’s themes. Refreshments will be available.

Fla. Museum to release tagged, live Monarchs at ButterflyFest Oct. 13-14

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History plans to release about 500 live, tagged Monarchs during ButterflyFest Oct. 13-14, with the hope that some of these butterflies may be located in Mexico during the annual overwintering of this remarkable species, or back on the University of Florida campus next spring after their return trip.
