UF honors local educators, grad students for ‘engaged’ scholarship that benefits schools, community

East Coast butterflies topic of Florida Museum lecture April 23

Florida Museum to celebrate Earth Day with special activities

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will celebrate Earth Day from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, with several special activities, including donating $1 from every Butterfly Rainforest adult admission to the Lubee Bat Conservancy.

Tanzer elected president of national association

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida architecture professor Kim Tanzer recently was elected president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. In her role as president, Tanzer will represent the academic architecture community and run the day-to-day operations of the ACSA. She will begin her three-year term by serving as president-elect starting July 1 and will become president July 1, 2007.

University Press of Florida books win Florida Historical Society award

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Two University Press of Florida books are winners of the Florida Historical Society’s 2006 Rembert Patrick Best Academic Book Award. Phyllis E. Kolianos and Brent R. Weisman are co-editors of “The Lost Florida Manuscript of Frank Hamilton Cushing,” and “The Florida Journals of Frank Hamilton Cushing.”

Florida Museum fossil dig successful, more volunteers needed through May 13

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Museum of Natural History paleontologists and volunteers have recovered 60 partial to nearly complete animal skeletons from an ancient clay-filled sinkhole located in western Alachua County since work at the site began in May 2005, but more volunteers are still needed for the project, scheduled to continue through May 13.

Lombardi Scholarship Program selects 2006 class

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Six incoming freshmen at the University of Florida have been offered scholarships through the Lombardi Scholars Program. This program is in its fifth year, and the six additional students will maintain the program at 32 participants.
