University Gallery opens season with “FBI Files”

The University Gallery opens its fall 2005 season Friday with the internationally acclaimed exhibition, “The FBI Files,” paintings and collages by Arnold Mesches. A reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m.

UF autism researcher receives $1.1 million in NIH funding

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A University of Florida autism researcher whose program focuses on the in-home training of fathers to better communicate and play with their autistic children recently received $1.1 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

University Athletic Association donates 2004 pay-per-view proceeds to libraries

The University of Florida Athletic Association recently donated $75,000 to the George A. Smathers Libraries from proceeds of last season’s pay-per-view televised football games. Half of the amount has been added to a growing UAA Endowment, which now totals more than $500,000. The remainder will be used to provide students enhanced electronic learning tools in the new Library West, which is slated to reopen next spring.

Retired UF education professor, civil rights leader, dies at 97

Hal G. Lewis Sr., a distinguished service professor emeritus in education at the University of Florida and a crusader for desegregation of Florida schools and college campuses, died at his daughter’s home in Livermore, Cal., on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005. He was 97.

UF students, others asked to volunteer 100 million minutes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida hopes a campaign to generate volunteerism this school year will result in 100 million minutes of community service by students and other area residents.

Professor leaving UF to become dean at Utah State

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Nat Frazer, professor and chairman of the wildlife ecology and conservation department at the University of Florida, will become dean of the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University in Logan, beginning Jan. 1, 2006.

UF reports record amount of research awards, nearly $500 million

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Research awards to the University of Florida rose 5 percent to a record $494 million in 2004-05, due in part to a 10.8 percent increase in federal funding and a 16.5 percent increase in foundation awards.

UF researcher gets $11 million to study genes, blood pressure drugs

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A University of Florida scientist has been awarded an $11.1 million, five-year grant to lead a large group of genetic researchers in an effort to help people with high blood pressure.
