Navigating UF when you're on the autism spectrum

The number of students with autism spectrum disorder as identified with University of Florida has doubled in the past two years. Aware of this steady and sudden increase, UF listened to autistic students and their parents who were more concerned about social interactions on campus than academics. In response, UF’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, the Counseling and Wellness Center and the Disability Resource Center teamed up to create SOCIAL Gators (Student Opportunities for Career, Independent, and Academic Life), an outreach that helps students with autism thrive on campus through weekly group meetings, mentors, academic coaching and online classes focused on developing social skills.
