Major grant will help students who have served their country

July 29, 2015

The Collegiate Veterans Society at the University of Florida has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Home Depot Foundation Fund and Student Veterans of America. The grant will fund new cabinets that will serve as lockers for student veterans who utilize the Collegiate Veterans Success Center.

This is the second year SVA, has partnered with The Home Depot Foundation Fund to provide grants for veteran resource centers on college campuses across the country.

Since 2008, SVA has helped those returning from military service obtain the resources, support and advocacy needed to achieve success in higher education and after graduation. The Collegiate Veterans Society at the University of Florida is a nonprofit organization serving approximately 800 student veterans. The organization is dedicated to helping fellow collegiate veterans in the transition from military to college life and enriching the community and UF with veteran-sponsored and patriotic events.

The Collegiate Veterans Success Center is located on the fourth floor of Yon Hall. The center serves student veterans at UF by providing a designated location on campus for them to study, meet with on- and off-campus resources and to spend time supporting each other in a welcoming, fun and relaxing space. The funds from the grant will be used to install Home Depot cabinets in the CVSC. Since the majority of veterans live off-campus, the CVSC serves as a place to spend time with fellow veterans or study at UF.

“The student veterans and Collegiate Veterans Society at the University of Florida are honored and excited to be selected as a recipient of this generous grant from the Home Depot Foundation Fund and Student Veterans of America,” says Alan Ferry, who serves as the president of the Collegiate Veterans Society. “The funds will be put to good use by enhancing the already incredible services the Collegiate Veterans Success Center provides to myself and so many other UF student veterans.”
