Samuel Proctor Oral History Program receives ‘Latino Americans: 500 Years of History’ grant

July 10, 2015

The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program has been selected to receive a competitive Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.

As one of 55 selected for a $10,000 award, the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program will receive the grant to hold public programming about Latino history and culture.

The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program will also receive the six-part, NEH-supported documentary film “Latino Americans,” created for PBS in 2013 by the WETA public television station. The film shows the history of Latinos in the United States from the 16th century to present day.

The Latino Americans funding will allow the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program to continue and expand their digital research initiatives in Latino history. The program’s Latina/o Diaspora in the Americas Project, founded in 2014, is a growing archive of more than 100 oral histories dedicated to allowing Latina/os to share their historical experiences related to identity, immigration reform, labor conditions, education and civil rights.
