A weeklong music event with a distinctly Brazilian accent

The University of Florida School of Music, in collaboration with Broward College, will present the 2015 Brazilian Music Institute, or BMI, from Monday, May 11 through Friday, May 15. BMI brings together outstanding artists for a weeklong event designed to extend the experience and expand the possibilities of learning and performing Brazilian music.
The institute will present two Ritmo & Romance closing concerts on Friday, May 15 at 8 p.m. at Broward College’s Bailey Hall, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie, and on Sunday, May 17, at 4 p.m. in the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall in Gainesville.
Founded and organized by Welson Tremura in 2001, BMI is a training ground for Brazilian music. Previously held in Gainesville, this year’s event will be the first one to take place at Broward College as a result of a three-year award from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to bring BMI to Broward County.
Students from the University of Florida, Broward College and others enrolled in this year’s event will work with special artist Antonio Adolfo (piano), Hermógenes Araújo (percussion), Alexander Crook (drum set/percussion), Larry Crook (percussion), Beatriz Malnic (voice), Ulisses Rocha (guitar), James Sain (electric bass) and Welson Tremura (voice/guitar).
The Ritmo & Romanceclosing concerts will celebrate the diversity of Brazilian culture with sensual rhythms and romantic lyrics and will feature all of this year’s guest artists plus selected BMI participants.

The $25 ticket level includes access to a post-concert reception and toast with the artists.
