Monday, March 9
DIABETES GENE -- The genes that increase the risk of Type 1 diabetes have lost their hiding place. A research group that includes a University of Florida genetics expert has located and narrowed down the number of genes that play a role in the disease, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Genetics. Knowing the identities and location of causative genes is a crucial development: Other researchers can use this information to better predict who might develop Type 1 diabetes and how to prevent it. “It’s a game-changer for Type 1 diabetes,” said Patrick Concannon, director of the University of Florida Genetics Institute.

FATIGUE -- UF researchers have looked at the mechanisms of chronic fatigue syndrome, showing for the first time that fatigue pathways are more sensitive in people with chronic fatigue syndrome than in those without the syndrome. The syndrome just last month was renamed systemic exertion intolerance disease, or SEID, which has been controversial.

The University of Florida Academic and Professional Assembly will host an event focused on Florida politics and UF’s legislative agenda at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Emerson Alumni Hall, Presidents Room B. Jane Adams, vice president of University Relations for the University of Florida will lead the discussion.

Tired feet, warm hearts
Each year, more than 800 UF students stay awake and on their feet to raise money and awareness for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals by participating in the Dance Marathon at the University of Florida. The annual 26.2-hour event will be take place March 14-15 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. In its 20-year history, the event has raised more than $8 million, making it the most successful student-run philanthropy in the Southeastern United States.

Modern contemporary dance meets real-life storytelling in “Dance 2015: Based on True Stories,” presented by the UF School of Theatre + Dance and directed by Trent D.
