Lecture to explore art in early Colonial Peru

March 10, 2015

The Gainesville Society of the Archaeological Institute of America presents a lecture by Maya Stanfield-Mazzi, associate professor in the department of art history, March 11 at 5:30 pm in Fine Arts Building B, Room 103.

Entitled "From Inca to Christian: Tracing Artistic Change in Early Colonial Peru, 1530-1570," the lecture will address the sources that can be used, whether archaeological or archival, to better understand the beginnings of Christian art in Peru.

Among the questions Stanfield-Mazzi will address are:

  • “What Christian art existed in Peru in the first decades after the Spanish conquest?”
  • “With what kinds of Inca art did it coexist?”
  • “Does this early art help explain the later success of the Christian faith?”

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Maya Stanfield-Mazzi at 352-273-3070 or mstanfield@arts.ufl.edu. You may also visit http://classics.ufl.edu/other-resources/aia/.
