UF named a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars for 2014-15

February 19, 2015

Once again, the University of Florida is a leader among the nation’s colleges and universities for its number of Fulbright U.S. Scholars, according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Nine UF scholars were awarded Fulbright grants for 2014-15, outpacing all other U.S. research institutions with the exception of the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard University.

“Fulbright Scholar Programs play a vitally important role in helping UF connect with the rest of the world academically and culturally,” said Charles Guy, a UF professor of agriculture and a 2012-13 Fulbright grant recipient. “Student and faculty engagement and collaboration with foreign institutions along with the receipt of students and visiting scholars from other countries greatly expands our diversity and enhances our academic programs.”

UF’s newest Fulbright U.S. Scholars and their discipline areas are:

  • Manuel Bermudez, computer science
  • Myoseon Jang, environmental sciences
  • Jennifer Le Jeunne Ramos, education
  • Phil Lounibos, entomology
  • Ramachandran Nair, environmental sciences
  • Nawari Nawari, architectural engineering
  • Juan Nino, engineering
  • Malini Schueller, literature
  • Kevin Thompson, environmental sciences

Created by Sen. J. William Fulbright in 1946, the scholarship program gives American students and scholars an opportunity to study or conduct research abroad while providing citizens of other countries the chance to do the same in the United States. More than 1,100 U.S. college and university faculty and administrators, professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers and independent scholars in 125 countries are awarded Fulbright grants each year to teach and conduct research.

UF is regularly included in the annual list of the nation’s research institutions that produce the most Fulbright U.S. Scholars. A total of 38 UF scholars have received the prestigious recognition in the past five years.
