Notable speakers highlight Holocaust conference

February 17, 2015

The Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida presents "Writing Retribution: Holocaust Justice and its Meaning," an international conference, on Feb. 21 and 22.

The plenary address will given by Amherst College professor Lawrence Douglas at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Hillel All Purpose Room.

Sunday will feature a rare U.S. appearance by Sophie Lillie, perhaps the most noteworthy art provenance sleuth in the world, and at the forefront of efforts to restore Nazi-plundered masterpieces for the past twenty years. Her talk, “The Beethoven Frieze: One Man’s Quest to Recover Gustav Klimt’s Monumental Masterpiece,” is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday in the Harn Gallery Auditorium.

The conference will feature leading scholars from North America and Europe, and will cover topic ranging from the punishment of Nazi criminals, to the use of Nazi collaborators by the CIA, to the restitution of art masterpieces.

This event is made possible through a special gift by Norman and Irma Braman, with additional funds from the Harry Rich Endowment at the Center for Jewish Studies and the Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica.

All sessions are free and open to the public. For more information, please visit http://jst.ufl.edu/
