UF urges students to stay safe during Jacksonville visit

October 28, 2014

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The University of Florida wants students and others to be smart and stay safe if they are traveling to Jacksonville this weekend for the Florida-Georgia football game.

With the tremendous number of visitors, cell phone service may not be consistent, causing phones to run out of power more quickly than usual. To conserve batteries, limit phone calls; instead of calling, make plans to meet friends at a set time and location if you become separated from them. Also, keep in your wallet or purse a printed copy of the address where you are staying, your friends' phone numbers and other details.

Other reminders of ways to stay safe:
1. Stay in groups
2. Stay in high-traffic areas
3. Choose a designated driver
4. Take a cab or free trolley
5. Act responsibly
6. If you need help, go to a Sideline Safety Zone location

The Sideline Safety Zone is presented by Williams Scotsman and produced by City of Jacksonville to provide areas where students visiting downtown Jacksonville before, during, and after the festivities can find assistance such as basic medical help, first aid, transportation, directions, telephone service, food, water, coffee and more. The zone is about helping people, not punishing them. Fans who request assistance at the Zone for themselves or their friends will not be subject to legal action on alcohol issues.

If you need more information about the SafetyZones, call the hotline: (904) 630-SAFE (7233)
