GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The following events are scheduled in the near future at the University of Florida:

Panel discussion looks at fair and impartial judiciary

Former Florida Bar President Scott Hawkins will moderate a panel discussion on Florida’s judicial retention election system at 1 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Chesterfield Smith Memorial Classroom, HOL 180, at the Levin College of Law. The panelists are: Marsha Ternus, former chief justice of the Iowa Supreme Court; Harry Anstead and Major Harding, former chief justices of the Florida Supreme Court. Award-winning journalist, best-selling author to speak at UF

Hedrick Smith, one of America’s premier journalists, will speak at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 in Pugh Hall. Smith is a Pulitzer Prize winner, former New York Times reporter and editor and an Emmy award-winning producer/correspondent. His current best seller, “Who Stole the American Dream” reveals 30 years of U.S. political and economic history. The event and parking are free and open to the public. Conference looks at abuse victims who became defendants

A conference Oct. 30-31 will focus on victims of domestic violence who became defendants in the criminal justice system as a result of their response to violence against them. The conference will feature leading experts in domestic violence, including attorney and author Joshua Safran, who fought for the release of Debbie Peaglar, a domestic violence survivor who served 25 years in prison for her alleged involvement in the death of her husband who abused her and forced her into prostitution. A documentary about her story will be screened at 3 p.m. Oct. 30 in UF Law’s Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom, HOL 180. Lectures will begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 31. It is free and open to the public but registration is required.

Author of book on Microsoft antitrust cases to speak

The Bayard Wickliffe Heath Memorial Lecture Series at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 31 will feature NYU law professor Harry First, co-author of the forthcoming book, The Microsoft Antitrust Cases: Competition Policy for the Twenty-first Century. The event is free and open to the public and will be held at the University of Florida Levin College of Law at 10:30 a.m. in HOL 360. The Heath Memorial Lecture Series is made possible by a gift from Inez Heath, widow of Bayard “Wick” Heath. This year’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Robert F. Lanzillotti Public Policy Research Center and the Robert F. and Patricia J. Lanzillotti Family Fund. Before his death in 2008, Heath was the senior competition consultant with Info Tech, a Gainesville firm specializing in statistical and econometric consulting, expert witness testimony and antitrust law.

Seminar looks at ways to move forward on local diversity issues

A seminar titled “Race and Diversity: Building Bridges, Overcoming Adversity, and Moving Forward” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Straughn IFAS Extension Professional Development Center. The first half of the program will be an informational discussion, featuring Sharon Austin, political science professor; Chris Gibson, associate professor in criminology and law; and Patricia Hilliard-Nunn, African American studies adjunct associate professor. The second half will allow audience to participate in a dialogue with Mayor Ed Braddy, Police Chief Tony Jones and other community leaders. The event is free and open to the public.
