GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The following events are scheduled in the near future at the University of Florida:

Engineering Day set for Sept. 30

The College of Engineering will host Engineering Day at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Reitz Student Union Grand Ballroom. The event provides students with the opportunity to meet recruiters who will be at Career Showcase. The event will include a professional development panel and a networking session.

Workshop discusses science fiction impact

UF’s Science Fiction Working Group will host the International and Minority Science Fiction in a Global World workshop 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1 in Smathers Library, Room 100. UF faculty members will give presentations on the importance of science fiction from global cultures and subcultures as a creative and scholarly context for discussions of today’s artistic, ethical and political issues. The keynote address by science fiction author Anabel Enriquez Pineiro starts at 7:30 p.m. in Ustler Hall Atrium. This event is free and open to the public. Actor-activist George Takei to speak Oct. 7
ACCENT Speakers Bureau, Pride Student Union and the Asian American Student Union will bring actor and activist George Takei to campus Oct. 7. The program starts at 8 p.m. in University Auditorium. Photography is not allowed during the program, but news media may record and photograph during the first five minutes of remarks. Media credentials will be managed through UF Media Relations. Requests should be sent to sfo@ufl.edu and should include the name of the attendee, the name of the news organization and the contact phone and email address of the attendee. The deadline to submit requests for credentials is 5 p.m. Oct. 6.

Gubernatorial debate watch party Oct. 15

The Bob Graham Center for Public Service will host a live watch party of the gubernatorial debate at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 15 in Pugh Hall. The event will start with a pre-debate panel, including political science professors Michael Martinez and Daniel Smith, as well as associate professor Michael McDonald. The debate will be broadcast at 7 p.m. and followed by a post-debate discussion. Food and refreshments will be provided.
