UF events of possible media interest listed (Aug. 25)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The following events are scheduled in the near future at the University of Florida:

Flag-raising ceremony scheduled for Tuesday

A flag-raising ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Aug. 26 on the front steps of Tigert Hall. The event recognizes the newly constructed flag garden that contains three flagpoles. Speakers will include UF President Bernie Machen; Curtis Reynolds, vice president for business affairs; and Bob Gasche of Gainesville, a World War II veteran of Iwo Jima. Members of the University Police, UF ROTC and Alachua County veterans will raise the flags.

Seminar on ebola outbreak

A seminar on the outbreak of the ebola virus in four West African countries is the subject of a seminar at 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Emerging Pathogens Institute, first floor seminar room, Mowry Road. Speakers will be Dr. John Lednicky, associate professor in the department of environmental and global health in the College of Public Health and Health Professions, and Dr. Paul Psychas, assistant professor in the department of community health and family medicine in the College of Medicine. Lednicky conducts virology/microbiology work focusing on emerging infectious agents, respiratory pathogens, aerobiology and vector-borne viruses. He will provide an overview of ebola microbiology and epidemiology. As a U.S. government medical officer in West Africa, Psychas led efforts to strengthen local health systems and guided the Peace Corps' response to the 2002 ebola outbreak in Gabon. He will discuss the challenges of implementing ebola control principles in the West African setting. 

Machen to give State of the University Address

UF President Bernie Machen will give his State of the University Address during the Faculty Senate meeting, starting at 3 p.m. Aug. 28 in Emerson Alumni Hall. Society of Women Engineers to host eSwamp Day

UF’s chapter of the Society of Women Engineers will host its 11th annual eSwamp Day at 9 a.m. Aug. 31 at Weil Hall, Room 270. The event is designed to help women who have just begun careers in engineering transition to UF. More than 240 women engineers are scheduled to attend.
