Smathers exhibition examines women’s role in Cuban history

April 4, 2014

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A new Smathers Libraries bilingual exhibition at the University of Florida highlights the many ways in which women were active and vital participants in Cuba’s revolutions.

On view through May 23, ”Revolucionarias: Women and the Formation of the Cuban Nation” examines the lives of various women throughout Cuban history, their impacts on the country, and the country’s impact on them. The exhibition was inspired by recent donations to the Special and Area Studies Collections. It features photographs, letters and books from across the Libraries’ collections. The items are organized into five thematic groupings, which reflect the wide reaching effect of revolution; promises of the revolution, women revolutionaries, food and domestic life, disruption of families, and political prisoners.

The exhibition is curated by Margarita Vargas-Betancourt and Lillian Guerra with assistance from Alexis Baldacci and Daniel J. Fernandez-Guevara.

The Smathers Library Gallery is on the second floor of the Library East on the UF campus. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, unless otherwise specified and with occasional exceptions for maintenance. All exhibitions are open to the public and free of charge.
