Longtime federal judge visits UF to talk about his career

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 33^rd annual Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in Law will impart lessons and wisdom gathered over a long and distinguished legal career, as senior circuit judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11^th Circuit Emmett R. Cox presents, “Thirty Two Years on the Federal Bench: Some Things I Have Learned.”

The lecture will be March 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom, HOL 180. The event is free and open to the public.

Cox was nominated in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed later the same year to serve on the U.S. Disctrict Court for the Southern District of Alabama, and was nominated in 1987 to serve on the 11^th Circuit Court of Appeals. His nomination was confirmed in 1988 and he attained senior status in 2000.

The Florida Law Review Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in Law series was established by the U.S. Sugar Corporation and the law firms of Dunwody, White, & Landon, P.A. and Mershon, Sawyer, Johnston, Dunwody & Cole in honor of Elliot and Atwood Dunwody. The honorees were brothers who dedicated their lives to the legal profession and who set a standard of excellence for The Florida Bar. As graduates of the University of Florida College of Law, they labored long, continuously and quietly to better the social and economic conditions in Florida.

The series is intended to perpetuate the example set by the Dunwody brothers by providing a forum for renowned legal scholars to present novel and challenging ideas.
