Symposium examines aspects of immigration reform

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — An immigration reform symposium looking at its political and cultural contexts will be held in two sessions on Thursday in Little Hall, Room L109.

At 6 p.m., a dialogue between elected officials and students living in the country illegally will take place. The discussion will focus on tuition equity, and panelists include state Sens. Dwight Bullard, D-Miami, and Darren Soto, D-Orlando.

At 7 p.m., a panel will discuss immigration in the U.S. from different cultural perspectives. Panelists include UF International Center Dean David Sammons, UF political science professor Philip Williams, UF law professor Wentong Zheng and UF students Ken Deato and Diego Castillo Jr.

The event is sponsored by Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Student Association, Pride Student Union, the Asian American Student Union, Asian Kaleidoscope Month, Multicultural & Diversity Affairs, Student Government, Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures and CHISPAS.

The symposium may also serve as credit for First Year Florida students Workshop Success Series.
