Orlando TV station to broadcast live from plaza Friday morning

September 19, 2013

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Orlando’s Fox 35 is scheduled to broadcast its popular “Good Day” morning show live from Plaza of the Americas on the University of Florida campus from 7 to 10 a.m. Friday and is devoting the entire broadcast to stories about UF.

“Good Day” anchors John Brown and Luanne Sorrell will be on the plaza as Fox 35 reporters provide live coverage from all corners of campus. Highlights will include the Gator cheerleaders, Gator mascots Albert and Alberta, the Gator Marching Band, critters from the entomology department, tailgating with the Swamp Restaurant, the unicycle club, a student fashion show, and, of course, plenty of fired-up students.

Gator Network radio announcer Mick Hubert, the “Voice of the Florida Gators” will stop by to visit with the anchors, as will UF swimmer Elizabeth Beisel, winner of two medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Gainesville residents can view the show on Ocala’s Fox 51 (channel 13 on Cox Communications Gainesville). The show can be viewed live on the internet on the Fox 35 live newscast page.

Posts, tweets and photos will also be presented on social media using the hashtag #Fox35UF on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other platforms.

Pre-recorded segments will feature:

  • The Gatorade legacy;
  • Starting quarterback Jeff Driskel’s thoughts on the upcoming Tennessee game;
  • Pro golfer Chris DiMarco and 2006 World Series MVP David Eckstein talking about what it’s like to be a Gator playing on sport’s biggest stages;
  • A message from the Office of Admissions about getting in to UF;
  • The invasion of new insects in Florida;
  • Economics professor Mark Rush explaining how he’s used a revered local Mexican restaurant to illustrate his lectures on supply and demand;
  • UF shark expert George Burgess;
  • Engineering professor Kamran Mohseni discussing drones he hopes to fly into a hurricane to get vital data;
  • UF’s HiPerGator, the state’s fastest and most powerful supercomputer;
  • The hurricane simulator at UF.

Fox 35 chose UF because “the university has such a huge following in Central Florida, both athletically and academically, and has grown into one of the most academically rigorous schools in the country,” a Fox executive producer said.
