Tobacco Free Florida's smoke-free certification program to launch at UF

WHAT:
Florida Department of Health and University of Florida leaders will award the University of Florida and The Continuum apartment community with the first Tobacco Free Florida Smoke-Free Certifications.

At the event, Florida’s surgeon general will also launch Tobacco Free Florida’s Smoke-Free Certification Program as a pilot program covering nine counties. The certification program will help Florida families easily identify communities that are smoke-free, helping them make informed choices when exploring healthy living options.

WHY:
Smoke-free properties can protect nonsmoking tenants from the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, which can move along air ducts, through cracks in the walls and floors, through elevator shafts, and along plumbing and electrical lines affecting units that are nearby. Tobacco Free Florida’s Smoke-Free Certification will help raise awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke and help to increase the availability, visibility and awareness of smoke-free living options.
