GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Here is a release the University of Florida’s media relations office expects to send next week, subject to change:

Monday, June 3

WARFARIN STUDY — Warfarin, the most widely prescribed oral anticoagulant in the U.S., with more than 35 million prescriptions annually, is critical for safe and effective treatment for patients requiring blood thinning to prevent strokes. Warfarin also contributes to about 30% of hospital admissions for adverse drug events since dose requirements vary substantially among patients. The consortium of researchers have found a major gene affecting a clinically relevant warfarin dose variability in African Americans independent of previous genetic findings. Incorporation of this variant into pharmacogenetic dosing algorithms could improve warfarin dose prediction in this population. EMBARGOED UNTIL 6:30 P.M. JUNE 4
