New dean named for College of Health and Human Performance
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Michael Reid, chair of the department of physiology and vice dean for biomedical science at the University of Kentucky, has been named the new dean of the University of Florida College of Health and Human Performance.
Reid will be succeeding Kelli Brown and is assuming his role July 1. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Texas at Arlington and his doctorate in physiology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
“I am honored to be selected as the next dean and look forward to working with the faculty, students, staff, and alumni who define this outstanding college,” he said.
Reid held faculty positions at Harvard University and Baylor College of Medicine before joining the University of Kentucky. As the Shih-Chun Wang professor and chair, he has directed a large physiology department that is ranked among the top 20 of all public universities in the U.S. He also was founding director for the University of Kentucky Center for Muscle Biology.
Reid also served as the associate editor for Physiological Reviews, consulting editor for the Journal of Applied Physiology and as an editorial board member for a number of peer-reviewed works. His own laboratory’s research, which covers muscle weakness and premature fatigue in those with chronic inflammatory diseases, has been documented in more than 100 articles.
He and his mission have had continued support from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies over the past 25 years. Reid has served broadly on NIH Study sections and panels, and he is a part of professional national committees, including the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Physiological Society.
