Traveling exhibit at HSC Library looks at Native Hawaiian traditions

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Health Science Center Library at the University of Florida is hosting “A Voyage to Health,” a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine about the revival of Native Hawaiian traditions.

Accompanying the exhibit will be a speaker and film series featuring presentations by faculty from UF and beyond. Members of the UF community and public are welcome to visit the exhibit throughout its stay in Gainesville through May 1.

The following events will occur in March and April:

• “The Health Consequences of Cultural Change in Vanuatu” (March 26): Koji Lum, professor of anthropology and biological sciences at Binghampton University, will discuss health transitions in the Pacific island nation of Vanatu.

• “Human Settlement and Malaria of the Pacific” (March 27): Professor Koji Lum will give a second talk discussing Pacific settlement, malaria selection and drug resistance evolution.

• “Economic Issues and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples” (March 28): UF law professor Winston Nagan will discuss the rights of indigenous peoples and related to economic and health issues.

• “Dance for Health” (April 8): Talks by UF professor Jill Sonke and Santa Fe professor Naana Horne will focus on the importance of dance to health and the use of dance as therapy.

• “Healing Spaces and Opening Doors Reception” (April 12): A panel will discuss ties between the natural environment and healing, featuring a variety of UF faculty including Nina Stoyan-Rosenzweig (Health Science Center archives), Rick Stepp (anthropology), Elizabeth Diehl (horticultural therapy), Linda Luecking (Wilmot Gardens) and Craig Tisher (nephrology). Also featuring interactive events including hula and Hawaiian print-making.

• Film Screening: “Whale Rider” (April 18)
