UFPA presents seven January performances

December 21, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida Performing Arts will host seven performances in January, featuring a diverse lineup of artists.

Leading off the month is the adaptation of the memoir of real-life married couple Annabelle Gurwitch (“Dinner and a Movie,” “Fired!”) and Jeff Kahn (“The Ben Stiller Show,” “40-Year-Old Virgin”), “YOU SAY TOMATO, I SAY SHUT UP!,” which will be performed at Squitieri Studio Theatre Jan. 8-12.

“ELVIS LIVES,” a Broadway-style tribute to Elvis Presley, comes to the Phillips Center Jan. 12. The performance features finalists from Elvis Presley Enterprises’ worldwide Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in an unforgettable multi-media and live musical journey across Elvis’ life.

January also brings a pair of top-notch dance performances to the Phillips Center Main Stage. On Jan. 19, the U.K. dance company Motionhouse will perform its U.S. premiere of “Scattered,” a production delving into the majesty and savagery of water using projection technology, daring dancing, aerial harnesses and bungees. On Jan. 24, MOMIX returns with “Botanica,” a production displaying dance at its most organic and inventive.

Rounding out UFPA’s January lineup are jazz saxophonist Steve Wilson and his ensemble Wilsonian’s Grain (Jan. 25 at University Auditorium); Vilde Frang (violin) and Michail Lifits (piano) (Jan. 28 at Squitieri Studio Theatre); and the Specticast pre-recorded presentation of Franz Lehar’s “The Merry Widow” (Jan. 20 at the Phillips Center).
