Overnight hours at Library West will continue during fall semester

August 21, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Student Government and the George A. Smathers Libraries have renewed their 24-hour, five-day-a-week partnership for the fall and spring semesters of the 2012-13 school year and for school years into the future.

Library West was open for 24 hours five days a week during fall and spring semesters in the 2011-12 school year as a pilot program, which will now continue for multiple years.

Student Government recognized the essential nature of the program and Allocations Chairwoman Katie Waldman, who first instituted the program, ensured its renewal.

Waldman, along with Student Body Treasurer Juan Rodriguez, confirms there are sufficient funds in the upcoming 2012-13 Student Government Budget to continue the partnership.

Student Government will pay $100,000 to cover the operating expenses of keeping Library West open 24 hours a day for five days a week for the upcoming school year and will continue the partnership in future years.

Positive feedback was received in surveys indicating that the ability to study in Library West into the early morning was beneficial for students. The complete hours schedule for fall is listed at
