August 10, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The following University of Florida expert is available to talk about swine influenza.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the number of confirmed human cases of influenza A (H3N2) since July 2011 is 145 — five times more than the estimate reported last week. Most of the cases are people who had contact with pigs at agricultural fairs. The jump in numbers is in large part because of a change in the rules about how cases are reported to health authorities.

Dr. Gregory C. Gray, a professor and chairman of the department of environmental and global health in the College of Public Health and Health Professions, and director of the Global Pathogens Laboratory.

Gray is an expert on emerging infectious diseases and diseases that can be spread between humans and animals. He has conducted studies of the influenza A (H1N1) virus in U.S. show pigs and their human handlers.
