Assemblies embrace diverse communities at UF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s offices of Multicultural & Diversity Affairs, Student Activities and Involvement, and Student Government will host the 2012 Welcome Assemblies during the Week of Culture, Aug. 23-29.

Welcome Assemblies introduce first-year and continuing students to the resources, opportunities, departmental and academic support at UF while welcoming students, faculty, staff and the entire community back for a new academic year. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from support offices and departments on campus that will assist them with being successful at UF. Students will also have an opportunity to learn more about some of the student organizations that are available to get involved in on campus.

The Week of Culture kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday with the Hispanic Latino Student Assembly in the Reitz Student Union Grand Ballroom. At 6 p.m. Friday, the main stage at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts will feature the Asian American Student Assembly. At 6:30 p.m. Monday, the Women’s Welcome Assembly will be held in Smathers 1A (Smathers Library East). At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Black Student Assembly will take place on the main stage of the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. To close out the Week of Culture, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Ally Welcome Assembly will take place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Reitz Student Union Grand Ballroom.

The Week of Culture events are open to all University of Florida undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, staff and community members. The assemblies are sponsored through each of the various registered student organizations: Hispanic Student Association, Asian American Student Union, Women’s Student Association, Black Student Union and Pride Student Union.
