UF stages Pulitzer Prize-winning Edward Albee play

June 12, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida College of Fine Arts and the School of Theatre and Dance kicks off its 2011-12 summer season with the Tony Award-winning play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” which won the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award of 1962-1963 and a Pulitzer Prize in drama.

It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. June 12-16 and at 2 p.m. June 17 during the Summer A semester, and again at 7:30 p.m. July 10-14 and 2 p.m. July 15 during Summer B.

An enduring classic of the American theatre, and one of the most searing and engaging plays ever written, Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia of Woolf” takes place on a campus of a New England college. World-weary history professor George (Rob Cope) and his tempestuous wife Martha (Michelle Bellaver), whose marriage is a battleground of wits and insults, have invited guests over to their house after a party, even though it is 2 a.m.

The unsuspecting guests are the new math professor Nick (Linden Tailor) and his wife Honey (Rachel Lynn Harrison). As night turns to day, both couples are subjected to an unsparing exorcism of their deepest secrets. By turns savage and savagely funny, Albee’s play is regarded as a great showcase for skilled actors. The play is directed by professor Kevin Marshall and brought to life by the scenic design of Jaime Frank, with lighting design by Ryan Bible and costumes by Becki Stafford. The stage manager is Erin Connelly.
