Jornal Pessoal now online in the UF Digital Collections

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The George A. Smathers Libraries now offers online access to Jornal Pessoal.

More than two decades (1987-2011) of the Jornal Pessoal of Lúcio Flávio Pinto, a newsletter from the Brazilian Amazon, are available online and archived for long-term digital preservation through the UF Digital Collections.

Pinto has been acclaimed for his independent journalism confronting powerful interests in Brazil in order to report on politics, the environment and other controversial concerns not covered in other venues. In 2005, the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York City awarded Pinto with the International Press Freedom Award.

The Jornal Pessoal issues online are from the Latin American Collection and Marianne Schmink, who kindly supplied many of the issues needed to complete this project. Pinto granted permission for the issues to be preserved and openly available online as open access.

All issues of the Jornal Pessoal within the UF Digital Collections (http://ufdc.ufl.edu/) are freely and fully accessible at http://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA00005008.

They are being made available in partnership with the Latin American Collection of the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections, with the generous support of the UF Center for Latin American Studies.

The functionalities and features of the UF Digital Collections are supported using the UF-developed SobekCM software. SobekCM is released as open source software under the GNU GPL license and can be downloaded from the SobekCM Software Download Site: http://ufdc.ufl.edu/software.
