Families invited to build sculptures at Harn on Saturday

June 11, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Harn Museum of Art will host a sculpture-building Family Day celebrating “Deep Roots, Bold Visions: Self-taught Artists of Alachua County” from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Families will tour the exhibition, which includes an area where works are displayed at a lower height specifically for the enjoyment of children. Working with The Repurpose Project, participants will build sculptures with found objects and recycled materials. Artists Jesse Aaron and Jerry Coker whose works are in the exhibition use such media.

Visitors may also watch an Art21 film about El Anatsui, who also works with recycled materials and his work is represented in the Harn’s contemporary collection.

Admission to Family Day is free, but a donation of $2 per child or $5 per family is requested if participating in the art-making activity. For more information please visit www.harn.ufl.edu.

The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, sculpture and mixed media works by Jesse Aaron, Alyne Harris, Eddy Mumma, Jerry Coker, Robert Roberg, Francis Moore and Baba Onabamiero Ogunleye. The exhibition continues through Sept. 9.
