UF launches online master’s degree in urban and regional planning

April 30, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — This fall, the University of Florida department of urban and regional planning in the College of Design, Construction and Planning will launch a new online master’s degree in urban and regional planning with specializations in Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, and sustainability.

Because all coursework is completed online, the new degree program will help planning professionals enhance their skills and careers or build a solid foundation for those who want to enter the profession for the first time.

“This degree program is extremely flexible,” said Kristin Larsen, chair of the department of urban and regional planning. “It gives people the opportunity – especially if someone is currently doing planning work but does not yet have a planning degree – to get the credentials while maintaining employment.”

Structured to provide an engaging and creative learning experience, both specializations begin with foundation and core courses before branching off into more advanced courses, providing focused paths of study. Each track culminates in capstone courses that offer the opportunity for professionals to get hands-on, practical experience with the new skills and technologies they’ve mastered.

Although one specialization focuses on sustainable planning concepts and strategies and the other addresses a sophisticated understanding of planning information systems, both specializations promote a future for professionals that broadens the prospects of their careers and their communities. This is achieved by constantly monitoring urban and regional planning trends and intentionally incorporating the latest technologies into study.

“The degree will enhance students’ understanding, knowledge and skill in planning,” Larsen said. “This program provides the broader picture while adding the public policy perspective that enhances how the built environment is designed and functions overall.”
