Smathers sponsors 'Edible Book' competition for National Library Week

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The George A. Smathers Libraries will host the sixth annual Edible Book Contest from 11 a.m. to noon April 12 on the walkway in front of Library West.

Contestants create edible dishes that have a theme related to a book. Judges will choose winners in four categories, and the public will choose a “best overall” winner. Winners will receive prize packages of donated items. The categories are Best Children’s Book, Best Non-Cake Entry, Best Non-Fiction Book and Best Pun.

The Edible Book Contest is a component of the 10th annual ReadFest, sponsored by the Smathers Libraries, in celebration of National Library Week.

Students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to the ReadFest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday to listen to volunteers read a 10-minute selection from a book, short story or play. A Children’s ReadFest will be helnd from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
