Larry A. DiMatteo named UF’s Teacher-Scholar of the Year

April 5, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Larry A. DiMatteo, Huber Hurst Professor in the Warrington College of Business Administration, has won the University of Florida’s Teacher-Scholar of the Year award for 2011-2012.

Originating in 1960, this is UF’s most prestigious and oldest faculty award. It offers an honorarium of $5,000 in addition to other recognition. In selecting the teacher-scholar, the award committee chooses a faculty member who demonstrates distinguished achievement in both teaching and scholarly activity, including research, creative writing, original works of art or more.

Additionally, UF recognizes professor of art history Elizabeth Ross from the College of Fine Arts as Teacher of the Year; Joanna Mossa from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as Faculty Adviser of the Year; and Erica L. Byrnes from the Warrington College of Business Administration as Professional Adviser of the Year.

These recipients were chosen as the teacher or adviser of the year in their respective colleges, and therefore were nominated for the award again at the university level. The awards encourage and reward excellence, innovation, and effectiveness in either teaching or advising. Only three awards are granted at the university level.

The winners, along with the college level award winners of the teaching and advising awards, were recognized at a reception hosted by President Bernie Machen and his wife, Chris Machen, Wednesday.

DiMatteo has served as chair of the department of management at UF. He also has been granted affiliated professorships at the Levin College of Law and the Center for European Studies. He received two bachelor’s degrees from the University at Buffalo, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his juris doctorate from Cornell University, masters of law from Harvard University, and his doctor of philosophy from Monash University (Australia).
