Students urged to learn about safe sex, healthy habits before break

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida students can learn about safe sex and other healthy habits before next week’s break by attending the 13th annual Sex in the Swamp at 7 p.m. today in the Florida Gym.

The event, titled “Gear Up Before You Go,” is hosted by the College of Health and Human Performance’s health education honorary, Eta Sigma Gamma.

ESG adviser Holly Moses said local organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the Alachua County Health Department report a sharp increase in the number of visits from students seeking STD and HIV testing and emergency contraception following spring break.

“These reports signify a need among UF students for information focused on health-promoting behaviors,” Moses said.

ESG President Sarah Napolitano said she hopes the event will influence and prepare students with information on a variety of health topics, from sun protection to alcohol use.

“Many of the more common spring break destinations include beaches or sunny destinations, and students can also come into situations that involve sex or alcohol or tobacco,” she said. “This is why we include topics such as alcohol and drug abuse, sun safety, and safe sexual health for both males and females. We also cover topics such as body image, stress, and personal safety.”

Events will include question-and-answer sessions with a “Sexpert” panel, health information booths, interactive games and entertainment. The free event will also include food and giveaways.

“I hope that students can become more comfortable with themselves and taking their health into their own hands and making it a priority,” Napolitano said. “I want students to feel empowered and educated when they leave Sex in the Swamp and confident that they can have a safe and fun spring break without putting their health at risk.”
