January 12, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications will launch a fully online, distance learning master of arts degree in mass communication with a specialization in global strategic communication in the summer of 2012.

Students in the program will learn principles and advanced techniques in international communications, advertising and public relations with courses in digital strategies, advocacy, research methods and ethics to enable them to conduct communication and media campaigns that incorporate the latest tactics in reaching and analyzing international audiences and stakeholders.

The degree work culminates in a capstone project that allows communication specialists to gain practical experience working with their newly acquired communication strategies. All other coursework is delivered in a flexible online format to accommodate the schedules of working professionals.

“More and more working professionals see the need to earn a master’s degree to expand the breadth of their education and increase their attractiveness to employers,” said Spiro Kiousis, chairman of the department of public relations and director of the college’s distance education programs. “UF’s graduate programs in mass communication consistently rank in the top ten nationally according to U.S. News and World Report, and we believe there is a strong market of professionals who are seeking these online programs. It is increasingly important for strategic communication professionals to understand the international arena.”

Completed in one and a half years, the master’s degree in global strategic communication has enrollment opportunities during fall, spring and summer semesters.
