Resurfacing, median improvements on Archer Road to begin Jan. 3

December 21, 2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Work is scheduled to begin Jan. 3 on a Florida Department of Transportation project to resurface Archer Road west of Interstate 75.

The project includes reconstructing the median opening at Arredondo Farms and Tower Square to only allow left turns from each direction on Archer Road. A second median at Southwest 78th Street will be modified and extended to allow left turns. Changes to both medians are necessary to improve safety and the flow of traffic in the area.

The asphalt will be removed between Southwest 44th and Southwest 78th streets and replaced with two layers of new asphalt. Damaged sidewalks and handrail along the sidewalks will also be replaced.

Crews will first work on the median modifications and sidewalks. Lane closures will be allowed at night Sunday through Thursday between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

FDOT hired APAC-Southeast Inc. of Jacksonville to complete the work for nearly $2 million. The work is expected to take about four months to complete, depending on bad weather or other unexpected circumstances. An average of 27,500 vehicles travel this section of Archer Road each day.
