Monday starts recognition of arts, humanities on campus

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Monday will kick off National Arts and Humanities Month at the University of Florida with a number of events.

An arts and cultural opportunities fair featuring community and campus organizations will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Reitz Student Union Colonnade. Participation is free to attendees and participating organizations, made possible by the UF College of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts College Council student organization. More than 50 groups are slated to participate.

There will be a special presentation at noon during the fair. Dignitaries and guest speakers, including UF President Bernie Machen and Gainesville Mayor Pro Tem Thomas Hawkins, will speak. Machen is expected to talk about the importance of arts and humanities in the higher education learning experience. Hawkins will present a proclamation on behalf of the city.

Also on Monday, the campus will see “Random Acts of Culture” between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. These events, which will include dancing, music and painting throughout campus, are aimed to increase awareness, appreciation and excitement for artistic opportunities at UF.
