Florida Museum extends 'Barrier Islands' exhibit through Aug. 7

June 23, 2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Due to popular demand, the Florida Museum of Natural History will display the exhibit “Barrier Islands: Creations of Tide and Time” through Aug. 7.

Originally scheduled to close June 26, the exhibit of 26 paintings by Florida artists Brenda Hofreiter, Nancy Moskovitz and Mary Jane Volkmann depicts barrier island scenes, including wildlife, lighthouses, landscapes, sunrises, sunsets and tidal marshes. All paintings are for sale and the artists have agreed to donate 30 percent of the proceeds to the museum.

“It’s great to have these paintings up for a while longer, especially during summer when our attention turns to the beaches and the fragile coastal habitats that need our protection,” said Darcie MacMahon, Florida Museum assistant director for exhibits.

Each of the artists is a past recipient of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Artist-in-Residence Program, which allowed them to live on Sapelo Island and paint neighboring barrier islands.

The exhibit is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Florida Museum of Natural History inspires people to value the biological richness and cultural heritage of our diverse world and make a positive difference in its future.
