UFPD gains national accreditation for sixth time

April 7, 2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Police Department has been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies for the sixth time.

The UFPD was initially accredited in 1996 and was the 14th university law enforcement agency in the country to do so at the time.

Accreditation is awarded by an independent reviewing committee, which conducts an on-site evaluation of the agency. Accreditation reviewers were in Gainesville in December when they not only conducted an on-site evaluation but also solicited input from the campus community and the public.

Attaining accredited status demonstrates to the community that an agency is committed to maintaining the highest standards of professional law enforcement service. An agency is accredited for a period of three years after which the agency must apply for reaccreditation.

The UFPD is accredited on the national level by CALEA, and is also accredited on two additional levels. The department is accredited on the state level through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation and on the college level through the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.

The next assessment process for the UFPD will be under CFA accreditation in 2012.
